Work in Japan - The 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, Ishikawa Prefecture

In the affected areas, while progress has been made in restoring infrastructure and relocating residents to temporary housing, approximately 2,200 people are still forced to live in evacuation centers. AAR Japan began providing emergency assistance in Ishikawa Prefecture immediately after the earthquake and continue to work closely with the survivors.

AAR Japan has been able to provide the following as part of their work following the earthquake:

Soup Kitchen

AAR Japan provide cooked hot meals at evacuation centers and community centers where neighborhood residents gather. The menus such as local dishes ‘Tori-Yasai Miso’ are carefully balanced in terms of nutrition, and were appreciated by everyone. They have provided 170,000 hot meals so far.

Distribution of Supplies

The Noto Peninsula earthquake devastated the transport infrastructure and made it difficult for relief supplies to reach areas with small populations. AAR Japan distribute a variety of supplies, including food, foodstuffs, drinking water, hygiene and daily necessities, clothing and paraffin, mainly to evacuation centers and welfare facilities in such areas.

Support for welfare facilities for persons with disabilities

AAR Japan deliver food, drinking water, hygiene products and essential equipment to welfare facilities for people with disabilities who are often left out of assistance when major disasters strike. They are helping to reopen these facilities by repairing buildings damaged by the earthquake and providing equipment and materials.

Support for Foreign Survivors

In cooperation with welfare networks and other support groups in the affected areas, AAR Japan provided food, drinking water, hygiene items and fuel for heating to foreigners who were often isolated. They also worked with the government and local support groups to provide assistance to promote interaction between them and the local people.

Community Support

As tailored support to meet the needs of survivors living in evacuation centers or at home, AAR Japan provide on-site massages by physiotherapists and other specialists, a ‘hot mobile bath’ service using a converted truck, lectures and consultation sessions in which lawyers explain support systems for rebuilding lives in an easy-to-understand manner, and the provision of electrical appliances to those who have moved into temporary housing.
