The ICRC in Lebanon

The ICRC has carried out its humanitarian work in Lebanon through several periods of armed conflict, including the 1975–1990 civil war. Currently, they are helping to meet the rapidly growing needs of people who have fled war and other violence across the region and of the communities hosting them.

The ongoing escalation of conflict is putting further strain on overloaded communities in the south of Lebanon. ICRC are deeply concerned that families are struggling to find food, clean water, or the lifesaving care they desperately need and as such have been actively enhancing emergency preparedness.

The impact of their work:

Since October 2023 the ICRC has achieved the following:

  • dispatched medications and consumables to 3 Emergency Medical Services, 12 Primary Healthcare Centers and 8 hospitals to help treat and care for the wounded.
  • provided contingency stocks sufficient of treating up to 2,000 patients over a 10-day period at Rafik Hariri University Hospital.
  • enhanced the emergency preparedness and response capabilities of 800 healthcare staff from 60 health structures.
  • actively engaged with parties to the conflict, reminding them of their obligations under IHL.
  • provided food assistance to 45,565 individuals (9,113 families) from 49 communities in collaboration with the Lebanese Red Cross.
  • maintained and repaired 15 pumping stations in affected areas to guarantee clean water for 565,000 individuals.
  • installed 10 large storage tanks to ensure a steady supply of water for affected communities in Southern Lebanon.
  • donated forensic items such as 1,790 body bags to hospitals to ensure the departed are treated with respect and dignity.
  • helped 10 hospitals/health centres run by the Lebanon branch of the Palestine Red Crescent Society to continue their daily operations with 2228,212 litres of fuel and 8 fuel tanks.
